How to get there...
If you choose to drive in, the quickest way is Hwy 101 crossing to the coast on Hwy 156. Hwy 68 is also a reasonable choice. However if you have the time, Hwy 1 is the scenic route and highly recommended. It will take a full day to travel up the coast from LA, and you can easily take several days stopping at the sights on the way.
If you fly into San Francisco (SFO) or San Jose (SJC), go south on Hwy 17 to Santa Cruz, and then take Hwy 1 south. This trip is about 2 to 3 hours.
The South Bay Striders has four YREs that you may pass as you travel to Asilomar, two to the north and two to the south, all just off Hwy 1: Santa Cruz, Capitola, Carmel and Point Lobos. Each walk has a different character, and any of them would be a delightful addition to the convention walks. And don't forget the two beautiful year rounds that are in the city of Monterey. Historic Monterey and Monterey Peninsula/Lovers Point.
The Asilomar travel page has a wealth of detail. The link is provided below. You might also want to consider flying into the Monterey Airport (MRY), which is just 8 miles from Asilomar. With this option you would not need a car during the convention, as all the convention walks start from Asilomar. There is a shuttle from the airport to Asilomar, but the public bus is a good option and much cheaper.
